Dementia is a difficult journey, and our team has the experience to keep your loved one thriving at home, even when the bad days start to outnumber the good days. While long-term care and dementia facilities do provide 24 / 7 availability of care, low nursing to patient ratios often mean that patients are often left alone. When difficulties arise, solutions of convenience are often utilized to sedate or take freedom away from patients. Sadly, mechanical restraints (putting a patient in a position where they cannot move), or even chemical restraints (literal sedatives applied by force, and often by injection), are frequently used in LTC dementia units to simplify care.
We do not believe that these are humane solutions to care for some of the most vulnerable patients in society. Dementia patients deserve dignity, even when it is difficult to deliver. Our trained teams and care managers create plans that keep patients occupied and thriving in whatever way that means for a patient, whether it is going for walks, doing tasks, or having conversations. Engaged patients are happy and healthy patients, and rarely require mechanical or chemical sedation.
Each patient and family is different, so we take the time to understand the problems so that we can provide a customized solution. Our Medical Director and Care Manager wil come to your home to meet the patient, examine the home environment, and hear about all the unique ways that you need support. In doing so, we will be able to know how to work around all of your existing supports, your limitations, and your needs, to craft a plan that will actually work.
